Why is a 3D CT scan important in dentistry?
A 3D CT scan is an extremely important imaging exam, as it helps diagnose many conditions and assess how serious they are. It is non-invasive and suitable for people of all ages. It provides more detailed images than other exams, which is why it is so important for diagnosis and for monitoring certain treatments.
How is a 3D CT scan done?
The patient stands in the centre of the machine and keeps their head still with the help of supports. The exact position may vary slightly depending on the area of the face being examined.
During the exam, the scanner rotates around the head and captures up to around 600 high-resolution images, without discomfort.
These images are collected by sensors and processed by software that reconstructs a digital volume, producing a detailed three-dimensional image of the teeth, bones and joints of the face and jaws.
Can anyone have a 3D CT scan?
Yes, a 3D CBCT scan can be done on almost anyone. However, because it involves a low dose of radiation, it should only be done on pregnant women when clinically indicated and after prior assessment. Young children and people who find it hard to stay still for a few seconds may need extra care or alternative positioning, always assessed by the professional in charge.

How long does a CT scan take?
The full appointment, including the 3D CBCT scan and initial assessment, takes no more than 30 minutes. The scan itself is very quick – only 10 to 40 seconds – but the total time includes welcoming, preparing and positioning the patient and a preliminary review of the images by the clinician.
