When should you take your child to the dentist for the first time?
The first appointment should take place as soon as the first teeth appear.
When do baby teeth come through?
Baby teeth usually come through between 6 and 12 months of age, and a variation of about 6 months either way is considered normal.
Does teething make babies feel unwell?
While teeth are coming through, the gums become inflamed, which causes some discomfort. That is why children often put their hands and objects – which may not be clean – in their mouth, making them prone to small mouth or even stomach infections.
How does tooth decay start?
As soon as teeth come through, a film called dental plaque sticks to the enamel. This film can contain bacteria that ferment certain sugars in the diet and release acids that demineralise the enamel. This creates an imbalance that leads to tooth decay.
When do permanent teeth come through?
Permanent teeth usually start coming through at around 5 or 6 years of age, beginning with the permanent incisors. Hygiene habits and techniques should be reviewed, because of the new position and size of these teeth, which will last a lifetime.
Should babies be given fluoride tablets?
The Portuguese Directorate-General of Health (DGS) advises against fluoride tablets or drops for babies and children. They are only recommended in cases of high risk of tooth decay, always from the age of 3 and on medical advice.
