FAQ
Frequently asked questions about General Dentistry
When should I change my toothbrush?
Every 3 months, or as soon as the bristles start to bend.
What should I use to brush my teeth?
Toothpaste and an always soft toothbrush, dental floss or tape every night and, where recommended, an interdental brush.
What is tooth decay?
It is a disease that affects almost 90% of the population in Portugal. It is caused by certain bacteria that can partially or completely destroy the tooth.
How does tooth decay develop?
When food containing carbohydrates – sweets, cakes, chocolate, gummies and so on – is eaten, decay-causing bacteria break it down and produce acids that dissolve the minerals in the teeth, which leads to cavities. This is especially harmful when these foods are eaten very often between meals or at night before going to bed.
How can I tell if I have tooth decay?
If you can feel a hole, or part of the tooth is missing, you most likely already have an advanced cavity. Early decay is not easy to spot and can usually only be detected by a dentist.
What is the best diet to keep teeth healthy?
It should be simple, varied and balanced. Avoid sweets between meals – ideally have them only as dessert.
