Why Do Teeth Darken? + Tips to Prevent It

What Makes Teeth Darken?

Darkening teeth are a common concern and can happen for many reasons. Whether due to natural factors or daily habits, tooth colour changes over time, which can affect the look of the smile.

Ageing and Genetics: Natural Factors

Over the years, some darkening of the teeth is inevitable. Ageing wears down the enamel, the outer layer of the teeth that gives them shine and protection.

As the enamel wears away, the dentine — the inner layer, which is naturally more yellow — becomes more visible, giving the teeth a darker shade. This is natural and happens to people of all ages, but it tends to be more noticeable in older people.

Another natural factor is genetics. Some people are born with naturally whiter teeth, while others have darker teeth because of the genetic make-up of their dentine and enamel.

Lifestyle and Diet

Some foods and drinks in our diet are major culprits when it comes to tooth stains. Drinks such as coffee, tea, red wine and soft drinks contain pigments that stick to the enamel and cause surface stains. Foods such as citrus fruits (orange, lemon) and foods rich in artificial colourings, like tomato-based sauces, can also contribute to darker teeth.

Another important factor is tobacco. Both smoking and other tobacco products have a big impact on tooth colour. The nicotine and tar in cigarettes not only stain the enamel but can also penetrate deep into the tooth, making the discolouration hard to remove with simple oral hygiene.

Medication and Harmful Habits

Some medicines can also darken teeth. A classic example is tetracycline antibiotics, which can cause permanent stains when taken while the teeth are developing (in children).

Long-term use of mouthwashes containing chlorhexidine can also cause surface stains.

Finally, poor oral hygiene is one of the main causes of yellowing and tartar build-up, which makes the darkening worse. Without proper care, plaque accumulates and turns into tartar, which affects the look of the teeth and causes other oral health problems.

Are There Treatments for Darkened Teeth?

When teeth have already darkened, there are different treatment options to restore their natural colour and improve the look of the smile.

These are the main approaches used in dentistry in Portugal.

1. Teeth Whitening

Teeth whitening is one of the most popular and effective treatments to remove stains and lighten the teeth. Whitening agents such as hydrogen peroxide or carbamide peroxide are applied; they penetrate the enamel and break down the molecules responsible for the discolouration.

There are two main ways to whiten teeth:

  1. Laser teeth whitening: faster and done only in the clinic, with a gel containing a higher concentration of whitening agent. Laser treatment works almost immediately and may take 1 or 2 sessions of 90 minutes.
  2. Home whitening: the dentist provides custom trays and a lower-concentration whitening gel so the patient can do the treatment at home. Although it takes longer, this method is also effective and controlled.

At Atelier do Sorriso we offer both teeth whitening options, so our patients can choose between the home method or laser treatment according to their needs and preferences. This means flexibility and personalised results in every case.

2. Root Canal Treatment

If a tooth has darkened because of trauma or an infection affecting the dental pulp, root canal treatment may be needed.

In this procedure, the dentist removes the damaged part of the tooth and fills the canal with a suitable material. Although the tooth regains its function, it may darken because it no longer has a blood supply.

In these cases, internal whitening can be used — the whitening gel is placed inside the tooth to restore its natural colour — or dental veneers can be fitted, as explained below.

3. Scaling (Tartar Removal)

Scaling, better known as deep dental cleaning, removes the tartar and plaque that build up on the teeth. This build-up can cause stains and darkening, as well as increasing the risk of gum disease.

Cleaning is done with ultrasonic or hand instruments, leaving a smoother tooth surface with its natural colour restored.

4. Dental Veneers

When teeth are badly stained or do not respond to traditional whitening, dental veneers can be the ideal solution.

Veneers are thin shells of porcelain or composite applied to the front surface of the teeth. They correct the colour and can also improve shape and alignment, for an immediate, long-lasting aesthetic transformation.

How to Prevent Teeth from Darkening?

Preventing darker teeth takes a combination of good daily habits and regular professional care. A few simple practices can keep your teeth white and healthy for longer, avoiding the need for more invasive treatments.

Best Oral Hygiene Practices

Good oral hygiene is the best defence against darkening teeth. Brush at least twice a day with fluoride toothpaste and a soft-bristled brush.

Flossing after meals is also essential to remove food particles that cause plaque and tartar. An antibacterial mouthwash helps eliminate germs that can contribute to darkening.

Foods and Drinks to Avoid

Some foods and drinks are major culprits in darkening teeth. To reduce the risk of stains, it is advisable to avoid or cut down on:

  • Coffee, tea and red wine: these drinks contain chromogenic agents that stick to the enamel and cause stains over time.
  • Soft drinks: rich in acids and artificial colourings, they wear down the enamel and can darken the teeth.
  • Citrus fruits and acidic foods: although healthy, eating too much orange or lemon can weaken the enamel and make darkening easier.

Whenever you have staining foods or drinks, try to brush your teeth soon afterwards or, if that is not possible, rinse your mouth with water to limit the effect.

The Importance of Regular Check-ups

Regular visits to the dentist are essential for healthy, attractive teeth. At these appointments, the dentist can carry out a deep clean (scaling) to remove tartar and surface stains that appear over time. The dentist can also monitor the overall health of your teeth, preventing future problems such as the need for root canal treatment or more invasive procedures.

Check-ups every six months make sure any problem is treated early, keeping the natural colour of your teeth and the look of your smile for longer.
